Glamping
I have just returned from a Spring Bank Holiday weekend glamping with my fiance, daughter, our dog and my brother in law, sister in law & our niece. And what an experience it was - although the weather wasn't particularly warm, we had a great time & thoroughly enjoyed our surroundings and relaxation more than anything.
Our Eco pods were based at a camp site just outside Carsington Water - Knockerdown - right on the southern edge of the Peak District. It's a little hidden, by driving into the pub, there is an Aladdin's cave of a campsite right behind there and even further down the field is the glampsite. Doesn't sound as glamorous as it seems, an eco pod is a rather large shed. There was a large bed which doubled up as a dining table and the two bunk beds - we ended up borrowing one of the cushions from our niece to make the bed a little more comfortable for our daughter.
The pub was a little gem, just on the road side and was obviously a popular choice for the campers as we pretty much filled the place on Saturday night, plus you get a 10% bonus off your meal if you are staying on the campsite. After our lovely meal on the Saturday, we retired to our eco pods, the girls having exhausted themselves on the nearby playground went straight to sleep. Sunday, we headed off to the local swimming pool - our daughter is a sucker for a Sunday morning swim session with her folks now matter where we are. Tom, Becky and Lola headed off to Bakewell in search of the best between a pudding and a tart. Having tired ourselves out at the Arc Leisure Centre, we then went into Matlock Bath. Feeling disappointed with the price of the Height of Abraham, we went in search of a park & ice cream & stumbled across Matlock Bath Aquarium and I was so pleased we found it. It entertained our girls for a good half hour before heading to the park for an ice cream.
Sunday evening was BBQ time and with my sister in law, we went to the local supermarket in search of a disposable BBQ and meat. We weren't disappointed, the market town of Wirksworth (who were holding their May bank holiday carnival the same weekend) made us chuckle as they have a tradition during carnival week to stick heads on poles, it looked like there were a lot of Guys for their bonfire night! Nevertheless, we managed to find enough food to satisfy our BBQ cravings at the local supermarket before cooking up a feast. The great thing about having an enormous field to play in is that the children & dogs can run around until they are absolutely shattered, luckily, that's what they all did. Even Baxter, our bonkers cairn terrier livened up the party by chasing the nearby donkeys.
Monday was the inevitable drive home. None of us wanted the weekend to end (even though we would have all secretly enjoyed proper toilet facilities) so we ended up having a walk around Carsington Water - which is simply beautiful, cannot wait to see it on a sunny day! And we found a great little farm shop, called the Pudding Stop where we had a slice of cake before going our separate ways. I cannot wait to go back up there but I reckon we might have the comfort of a proper toilet next time...!
